There's a better, more balanced approach to parking.
Our downtown is the heart of our city, but proposed changes to parking could seriously harm the local businesses that make it special. Plans involving parking meters or tripling the downtown assessment place an unfair burden on both customers and business owners. Punishing people for visiting downtown is not the answer.
We are advocating for a smarter, more balanced approach. Instead of installing meters that discourage quick shopping trips or imposing a massive assessment hike, let's split the cost and focus on the real problem: parking turnover.
Our proposed plan includes:
- Increased Enforcement: Focus on ticketing vehicles that violate the current 2-hour parking limits. This encourages turnover and frees up prime spots without charging every visitor.
- A Modest Assessment Increase: Instead of a 3x increase, a much smaller, manageable increase can help cover costs without crippling downtown businesses.
This balanced solution ensures that those who abuse the system are held accountable, while costs are shared fairly and our downtown remains a welcoming place for everyone.
